WordPress, known as a leading white hat SEO platform, becomes a target of ill-minded groups who try to circumvent WP’s reputation.
Authors of a new WordPress plugin LinkLaunder SEO set up a link exchange network. They suggest all scheme participants to automatically, free of charge, receive backlinks to their blog posts from other members.
A novice blogger may easily be sold on this – bunch of quality random incoming links, risk-free – a dream coming true. Or is it risk-free? The problem is, for links you get there’s similar amount of links you’ll have to give back, with no control over content of the link text or, even worse, landing pages content. Put it simply – it’s a zero-sum game (well, sort of). It wouldn’t make much sense if all PR7 sites (pages) linked only to PR7 sites and didn’t get any links from PR0-PR6 bloggers. Either way you cannot grow your PR by exchanging links with the similar PR pages, you need to gain positive link balance for growth.
Of course, there’s a “pro” version on the horizon, which will allow a subscriber to preserve the “link juice” (google juice) in the process of link exchange by means of
rel="nofollow" tag. I doubt it’ll be free too as everybody’ll have to give either juice or money for the “clean” links they receive.
Now, even if the fraudsters don’t launch any biz out of this, they are good to make a dent in the WP image, also possibly making life of people searching the web and SE’s a tad harder.
Hope WP caretakers will make sure this infection doesn’t spread.
